Axpo and Energix join forces to optimise
Poland’s first utility-scale battery
energy storage system
Axpo and Energix, a leading renewable energy developer and independent power producer (IPP), have signed an agreement to optimise the largest battery energy storage system (BESS) in Poland. This is yet another such contract to be signed by Axpo in Poland this year.
Under the agreement, Axpo is responsible for full revenue optimisation of the energy storage facility. Located in Nowe Czarnowo, West Pomerania, the BESS has a capacity of 24 MW and 56 MWh. Currently undergoing commissioning and prequalification for the balancing market, once a licence is obtained—scheduled for January 2026—it will set a new benchmark for energy storage in Poland, supporting the country’s transition to a more flexible and resilient power grid.
The Nowe Czarnowo energy storage facility was strategically built near the Krajnik power station, where Energix wind and photovoltaic farms already in Axpo’s portfolio also operate. All energy installations in the area require comprehensive management, including optimisation of connection costs to the national transmission grid, which is owned and operated by PSE. Axpo will provide full commercial and technical-regulatory support to the BESS, integrating it with the wholesale and balancing markets and associated ancillary services.
Axpo and Energix enjoy a long-standing partnership, including seven renewable power purchase agreements (PPAs) covering 300 MW of wind and 40 MW of photovoltaic capacity. The BESS contract sees a percentage split of profits generated by the storage facility between both parties. Additionally, the agreement covers needs that are essential from the perspective of an energy storage investor, such as handling of the capacity obligation and the prequalification to ancillary services market.
Mateusz Marczewski, Managing Director of Axpo in Poland said: “As one of the first companies in Poland, we have developed comprehensive contractual and commercial solutions for the optimisation of battery energy storage systems. Axpo’s flexible solutions can rapidly bring to market new services that stabilise the grid and increase the profitability of renewable projects, while also taking local regulations and market conditions fully into account. We’re delighted that our innovative partner Energix is among the first for whom we are optimising a BESS in Poland. Making best use of their facility’s potential is yet another important step in expanding our offering to provide flexibility to grid operators.”
Energix Polska CEO Artur Violante said: “Axpo is a proven and reliable partner for us, combining international know-how with local experience. That’s exactly what we need to diversify revenues from our wind and solar farms and introduce further innovations. The Nowe Czarnowo storage facility is just the beginning. The development of energy storage solutions like this is a key pillar of our expansion strategy in Poland and globally.”
Axpo has been active in the development, construction and commercial optimisation of large-scale battery systems in Switzerland and Europe for several years and is continuing to expand its battery storage systems business internationally.
